چکیده

Theoretical analyses are presented for the stability of symmetric and asymmetric vortex pairs over slender conical wings and bodies under small perturbations in an inviscid incompressible flow at high angles of attack and sideslip. The three-dimensional problem of a pair of vortices over slender conical wings and bodies is reduced to a problem in two dimensions by using the conical flow assumption and classical slender-body theory. The stability of symmetric and asymmetric vortex pairs over flat-plate delta wings, slender circular cones, and elliptic cones of various thickness ratios are examined. Results are compared with available experimental data. © 2004 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1637601#

Stability of Symmetric and Asymmetric Vortices over Slender Conical Wing-Body Combinations

Theoretical analyses of the stability of symmetric and asymmetric vortex pairs over slender conical wing-body combinations consisting of a slender circular or elliptic cone and a flat-plate delta wing under small perturbations in an inviscid incompressible steady flow at high angles of attack with or without sideslip are presented. The three-dimensional flow problem is reduced to a problem in t...

Experimental Investigation of Asymmetry of Vortex Flow Over Single Delta Wings

It is generally believed that, on slender delta wings, there is a critical state at which strong asymmetric vortices are found along the leading edge on the lee-side of the delta wing. These asymmetric vortices can lead to high lateral forces even when slender delta wing is at the zero angle of yaw. Some experimental studies reported recently, cast considerable doubt as to the validity of the a...

Stability of Vortex Pairs over Slender Conical Bodies: Analysis and Numerical Computation

A N INITIALLY symmetric vortex pair over a slender pointed body or wing–body combination, such as that shown in Fig. 1, becomes asymmetric as the angle of attack is increased beyond a certain value, causing large rolling moments in the case of swept wings or large side forces in the case of slender bodies, even at zero roll and yawing angles. At even larger angles of attack, unsteady vortex she...

Design of Optimal Wing–Body Configuration to Delay Onset of Vortex Asymmetry

O NE important phenomenon associated with high-angle-ofattack aerodynamics is the sudden onset of vortex asymmetry on the forebody of an air vehicle in symmetric flight. One of the first observations of the onset of vortex asymmetry was reported in 1951 by Allen and Perkins [1]. Interest in the phenomenon has been intensified since the late 1970s as concepts for highly maneuverable aircraft hav...

Calculations of the Flow over Thick, Conical, Slender Wings with Leading-Edge Separation

The vortex-sheet model of leading-edge separation previously applied to flat-plate delta wings has been applied to thick delta wings in the form of rhombic cones. The simplifications introduced by the use of slender-body theory and an asymptotic treatment for the core of the vortex have been retained. The results show that the vortex sheet leaves the wing tangentially to the lower surface. The ...
